SECS Meeting Wednesday, Climate Strike Friday!
Next SECS Meeting This Wednesday at 6:30! 🌱
CLIMATE STRIKE THIS FRIDAY! 12:30 P.M. in front of Alma! Wear orange!
The University of Illinois System promised to divest from fossil fuels by 2025, but still has $230 million invested in fossil fuel companies during the ongoing climate crisis. Protest their inaction with us this Friday!
Folks, it’s a busy week coming up for SECS!
First, a big shoutout to anyone who helped out with the bake sale or stopped by and bought anything. This was our first fundraiser of the year, and we can’t wait to have more!
Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 13th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Channing Murray Foundation (1209 W. Oregon Street).
We are gearing up for the climate strike (happening this Friday, September 15th, starting at 12:30 p.m) at this week’s meeting, and could use all the help we can get.
Action will be finalizing climate strike chants and helping Media to poster the quad with advertisements for Friday’s strike.
Media will be postering and chalking the quad to spread the word!
Education will continue updating our environmental awareness board and begin planning for upcoming collaborative events with the Urbana Park District and Women’s Resource Center.
Walkable Cities will begin making infographics to be used at Park(ing) Day’s booth in a few weeks.
Solidarity Gardens will finish filling garden beds and will plan fall crops for late September and October.
Show up on Wednesday! Show up to the climate strike! Go green or go HOME!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Climate Strike!
Our Fall Climate Strike is just four days away! This electric event will start at 12:30 pm on Friday, September 15th in front of Alma Mater. The Climate Strikes are protests of the University of Illinois’ failure to divest from fossil fuels. You can find out more about the strike and RSVP here!.
Be sure to wear orange!
Check out this Daily Illini article from last spring’s Climate Strike below.
Consider doing a class rap to promote the climate strike in your classes – it takes less than a minute and can make a huge difference. Here is a folder linked with everything you could possibly need; an email template to ask your professor to let you speak, talking points and infographics to supplement your minute in the spotlight, and a signup sheet to track your progress. If you do three class raps, you get a free sticker!
If you’re more comfortable having Trey ([email protected]) or Alex ([email protected]) come speak to your class, here is their availability for the week. If you’d like to contact them directly to arrange this, you can email them or join the Discord and message them there.
The SECS talk is back!
SECS’ flagship podcast is returning under Alex Chavez’s leadership. If you have a professor, boss, colleague, or friend that would have an interesting environmental topic to cover, let us know! Here is an interest form to connect us with the wonderful folks you know.

Sign the Fossil Free Illinois Open Letter!
In Fiscal Year 2022, the University of Illinois System reported over $120 million invested in 52 fossil fuel companies. This is in contrast to a fossil free future that seeks to mitigate climate change and ensure a healthy planet for all. Go here to learn more about and sign a letter that calls on the University of Illinois System to divest these funds.
